Costochondritis

Costochondritis

In this condition, a person has pain with touching a part of the chest, muscle tension in the chest, or a stinging pain quality.  They should not have a cough associated with the pain.  Sometimes there is a feeling of clicking or slipping of the ribs, where the ribs join with the sternum.  The symptoms may last for several months.  They can be treated by medications like ibuprofen and indomethacin.

There is no test for costochondritis.  Pain should be produced by touching certain ribs and blood tests and chest xray tests should be normal.
