Unintended weight loss

Sometimes we are asked to lose weight in order to stay healthy.  Keeping our weight down is helpful for our blood pressure, our joints, and our blood sugar, among others.

What if we lose weight without trying?

Unintentional weight loss can represent a serious problem.  The amount of weight loss is important.  When people lose more than 10% of their weight without changing their diet or exercise habits, a medical condition may be involved.

Unintended weight loss can be a result of an illness affecting the digestive system, the thyroid hormone, an infection, the muscles, or changes in the thinking or the mood.  A visit to the doctor and many kinds of tests are helpful for determining the cause of unintended weight loss.
