What is Dementia?

Dementia is an illness that affects memory, behavior, thinking, dressing or complex mental activities.  It is normally a gradual, progressive disease that occurs over several months or years.

These are types or dementia:

Alzheimers disease

Lewy body dementia

Fronto temporal dementia

Corticobasal ganglia degeneration

Parkinsons disease with dementia

Vascular dementia


There are also conditions that mimic dementia.  These include:

Creutzfeld Jakob disease

certain conditions related to cancer, such as metastatic brain cancer.

dementia related to dialysis

dementia related to liver or kidney disease

wernicke korsakoff syndrome

dementia related to multiple sclerosis (MS)
